Overnight tent camping trip:
Mount Arthur Lookout

Important access note: current public track-alert information shows access to Flora car park via Graham Valley Road is closed to all traffic, including walkers and cyclists, due to a major road collapse and slips. Treat this trip as a plan to use once access reopens, and check DOC/Plan My Walk before setting dates.

Trip summary

Route: Flora car park → Mount Arthur Hut track → Mount Arthur lookout area → return
Overnight style: tent camp near the lookout / below exposed tops, only if conditions are settled
Walking time: about 2–3 hours up, 1.5–2.5 hours down, plus camp time
Total hiking: roughly 4–5.5 hours
Grade: moderate, becoming exposed if continuing above the hut
Best season: late spring to autumn
Avoid: strong wind, low cloud, snow, ice, heavy rain, or poor visibility

DOC describes the Mount Arthur Hut Walk as a beech-forest walk from Flora car park to Mt Arthur Hut, while the wider Mount Arthur area gives access to both day and overnight walks. Graham Valley Road is steep, narrow, corrugated, slip-prone, and in winter DOC recommends 4WD with chains possibly needed if snow or ice is present.

Day 1: Flora car park to Mount Arthur lookout camp

Stage 1: Flora car park to Mount Arthur Hut

Start at Flora car park and follow the marked track through mountain beech forest towards Mount Arthur Hut. This is the steady, sheltered part of the walk and is a good place to judge the group, weather, and wind before committing higher.

Allow: 1–1.5 hours
Good stop: Mount Arthur Hut for lunch, water, and weather check

Stage 2: Mount Arthur Hut to lookout area

From the hut, continue carefully up the ridge towards the Mount Arthur lookout / lower open tops. This section feels much more alpine: more exposure, bigger views, and less shelter.

Do not push all the way to the summit for this trip. The aim is to camp near a suitable sheltered lookout area below the more exposed tops, enjoy the sunset and sunrise, then return safely the next morning.

Allow: 45–90 minutes from the hut, depending on how far you go and conditions.

Camp plan

Choose a low-impact, durable site that is:

  • sheltered from wind
  • away from the main track
  • away from hut entrances
  • away from fragile vegetation
  • away from waterways
  • not on exposed ridgelines

Because this is a higher, wind-prone area, take a proper tent, solid pegs, warm sleeping system, and the discipline to retreat to a lower camp if conditions are not right.

Day 2: Sunrise, pack up, return to Flora car park

Wake early for sunrise views if the weather is clear. After breakfast, pack up carefully and return the same way.

Suggested timing

Section Time
Pack camp 45–60 min
Lookout camp to Mount Arthur Hut 45–75 min
Mount Arthur Hut to Flora car park 1–1.5 hrs
Total walking 2–3 hrs

Keep the morning flexible. If cloud drops or wind rises overnight, skip any extra exploring and head down early.

Safer bad-weather version

If the forecast is windy, wet, or marginal, do not camp near the lookout. Use this safer version instead:

Flora car park → Mount Arthur Hut for views → return to Flora Hut area or lower sheltered camping → walk out next morning.

Flora Hut is set in a grassy clearing above Flora Stream, making the lower Flora area a more sheltered fallback than the exposed Mount Arthur ridge.
